FEAR FROM WITHIN

So the serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood.--Revelation 12:15

We have far more to fear from within than from without.  The hindrances to strength and success are far greater from the church itself than from the world.  Unbelievers have a right to expect that those who profess to be keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, will do more than any other class to promote and honor, by their consistent lives, by their godly example and their active influence, the cause which they represent.  But how often have the professed advocates of the truth proved the greatest obstacle to its advancement!  The unbelief indulged, the doubts expressed, the darkness cherished, encourage the presence of evil angels, and open the way for the accomplishment of Satan's devices. (Selected Messages, Book 1, 122)

Fanaticism, false excitement, false talking in tongues, and noisy exercises have been considered gifts which God has placed in the church.  Some have been deceived here.  The fruits of all this have not been good.  "Ye shall know them by their fruits."  Fanaticism and noise have been considered special evidences of faith.  Some are not satisfied with a meeting unless they have a powerful and happy time.  They work for this and get up an excitement of feeling.  But the influence of such meetings is not beneficial.  When the happy flight of feeling is gone, they sink lower than before the meeting because their happiness did not come from the right source.  The most profitable meetings for spiritual advancement are those which are characterized with solemnity and deep searching of heart; each seeking to know himself, and earnestly, in deep humility, seeking to learn of Christ. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, 412)

REFLECTION:  The evidence that the world cannot withstand and controvert, that God has sent Jesus into the world as its Redeemer, is in the oneness of the church.  Their unity and harmony is the convincing argument.  Satan is therefore constantly at work to prevent this harmony and union, that in witnessing the bickerings, strifes, and dissension, unbelievers shall become disgusted with Christianity and fastened in unbelief and infidelity.  God is dishonored by those who profess the truth while they are at variance with one another. (Manuscript 1, February 18, 1880)

THE BATTLE BELONGS TO GOD

Thus says the Lord to you: "Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God's."--2 Chronicles 20:15

The elect people of God will stand before men in official position, who do not make the Word of God their guide and counselor, but who follow their unconsecrated, undisciplined impulses.  Those who have taken a position to be loyal and true, to do the commandments of God, will understand by their own experience that they have adversaries who are moved by a power from beneath....Christ's disciples, like their Master, will be followed by continual temptation.  But Christ is their refuge, as He was the refuge of the importunate widow....

He who dwelleth in the heavenly sanctuary judgeth righteously.  His pleasure is more in His church, struggling with temptation here below, than in the imposing host of heavenly angels that surround His throne.  Those who wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places, are His special care....

The General of armies, with His angels that excel in strength, is with His people on the field of battle.  The adversary of souls is determined to oppose all who plant their feet on the platform of eternal truth, who in this perilous time uplift the banner on which is inscribed, The commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.  But rest assured that Christ fights with His army.  He Himself leads His followers to the battle.  In this hour of peril be steadfast.  Christ will renew the strength of every faithful soldier. (Manuscript 33, March 9, 1898)

REFLECTION:  As long as we fight the good fight and through the power of the Holy Spirit, keep the commandments, of God and have the faith of Jesus, we can claim the promise in His Word: "He will not leave you nor forsake you" (Deuteronomy 31:6).

WALL OF PROTECTION

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it.  For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.--Joshua 1:8

"The last state of that man is worse than the first.  Even so," said Jesus, "shall it be also unto this wicked generation."  There are none so hardened as those who have slighted the invitation of mercy, and done despite to the Spirit of grace.  The most common manifestation of the sin against the Holy Spirit is in persistently slighting Heaven's invitation to repent.  Every step in the rejection of Christ is a step toward the rejection of salvation, and toward the sin against the Holy Spirit. (The Desire of Ages, 324)

Our people need to understand the oracles of God; they need to have a systematic knowledge of the principles of revealed truth, which will fit them for what is coming upon the earth and prevent them from being carried about by every wind of doctrine. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, 273)

Build a wall of scripture around you, and you will see that the world cannot break it down.  Commit the Scriptures to memory, and then throw right back upon Satan when he comes with his temptations, "It is written."  This is the way that our Lord met the temptations of Satan, and resisted them. (The Review and Herald, April 10, 188)

REFLECTION:  Where shall we find laws more noble, pure, and just, than are exhibited on the statute books wherein is recorded the instruction given to Moses for the children of Israel?  Through all time these laws are to be perpetuated, that the character of God's people may be formed after the divine similitude.  The law is a wall of protection to those who are obedient to God's precepts. (Fundamental of Christian Education, 393-394)

GOD'S LAWS WRITTEN ON HEARTS

This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.--Jeremiah 31:33

Earthly powers are shaken.  We need not, and cannot, expect union among the nations of the earth.  Our position in the image of Nebuchadnezzar is represented by the toes, in a divided state, and of a crumbling material, that will not hold together.  Prophecy shows us that the great day of God is right upon us.  It hasteth greatly.

I saw that it is our duty in every case to obey the laws of our land, unless they conflict with the higher law which God spoke with an audible voice from Sinai, and afterword engraved on stone with His own finger.  "I will put My laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to Me a people."

He who has God's law written in the heart will obey God rather than men, and will sooner disobey all men than deviate in the least from the commandment of God.  God's people, taught by the inspiration of truth, and led by a good conscience to live by every word of God, will take His law, written in their hearts, as the only authority of the divine law are supreme. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, 360-361)

REFLECTION:  The same law that was engraved upon the tables of stone is written by the Holy Spirit upon the tables of the heart.  Instead of going about to establish our own righteousness we accept the righteousness of Christ.  His blood atones for our sins.  His obedience is accepted for us.  Then the heart renewed by the Holy Spirit will bring forth "the fruits of the Spirit."  Through the grace of Christ we shall live in obedience to the law of God written upon our hearts. (Patriarchs and Prophets, 372)

WINDS OF DOCTRINE

We should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting.--Ephesians 4:14

The fallacies of Satan are now being multiplied, and those who swerve from the path of truth will lose their bearings.  Having nothing to which to anchor, they will drift from one delusion to another, blown about by the winds of strange doctrines.  Satan has come down with great power.  Many will be deceived by his miracles....

I entreat everyone to be clear and firm regarding the certain truths that we have heard and received and advocated.  The statements of God's Word are plain.  Plant your feet firmly on the platform of eternal truth.  Reject every phase of error, even though it be covered with a semblance of reality....

The church needs to awake to an understanding of the subtle powers of satanic agencies that must be met.  If they will keep on the whole armor, they will be able to conquer all the foes they meet, some of which are not yet developed.

Confederacies will increase in number and power as we draw nearer to the end of time.  These confederacies will create opposing influences to the truth, forming new parties of professed believers who will act out their own delusive theories.  The apostasy will increase.  "Some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils."  Men and women have confederated to oppose the Lord God of heaven, and the church is only half awake to the situation.  There needs to be much prayer, much more of earnest effort, among professed believers. (Evangelism, 362-363)

REFLECTION:  Many know so little about their Bibles that they are unsettled in the faith.  They remove the old landmarks, and fallacies and winds of doctrine blow them hither and thither.  Science, falsely so-called, is wearing away the foundation of Christian principle; and those who once were in the faith drift away from the Bible landmarks, and divorce themselves from God, while still claiming to be his children. (The Review and Herald, December 29, 1896)

NEVER LET GO

Hold fast what you have till I come.--Revelation 2:25

Keep a firm hold upon the Lord Jesus, and never let go.  Have firm convictions as to what you believe.  Let the truths of God's Word lead you to devote heart, mind, soul, and strength to the doing of His will.  Lay hold resolutely upon a plain "Thus saith the Lord."  Let your only argument be, "It is written."  Thus we are to contend for the faith once delivered to the saints.  That faith has not lost any of its sacred, holy character, however objectionable its opposers may think it to be.

Those who follow their own mind and walk in their own way will form crooked characters.  Vain doctrines and subtle sentiments will be introduced with plausible presentations, to deceive, if possible, the very elect.  Are church members building upon the Rock?  The storm is coming, the storm that will try every man's faith, of what sort it is.  Believers must now be firmly rooted in Christ, or else they will be led astray by some phase of error.

Let your faith be substantiated by the Word of God.  Grasp firmly the living testimony of truth.  Have faith in Christ as a personal Saviour.  He has been and ever will be our Rock of Ages.  The testimony of the Spirit of God is true.  Change not your faith for any phase of doctrine, however pleasing it may appear, that will seduce the soul....

I entreat everyone to be clear and firm regarding the certain truths that we have heard and received and advocated.  The statements of God's Word are plain.  Plant your feet firmly on the platform of eternal truth.  Reject every phase of error, even though it be covered with a semblance of reality. (Evangelism, 361)

REFLECTION:  I asked the angel why there was no more faith and power in Israel.  He said, "Ye let go of the arm of the Lord too soon.  Press your petitions to the throne, and hold on by strong faith.  The promises are sure.  Believe ye receive the things ye ask for, and ye shall have them."...I saw that we had doubted the sure promises, and wounded the Saviour by our lack of faith....The weak should therefore look to Jesus, and believe in Him; they then exercise faith. (Early Writings, 73)

SIFTED BY FIERY TRIALS

Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trials which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ's sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.--1 Peter 4:12-13

It is always difficult to hold fast the beginning of our confidence firm unto the end, and the difficulty increases when there are hidden influences constantly at work to bring in another spirit, a counterworking element, on Satan's side of the question.

In the absence of the persecution there have drifted into our ranks men who appear sound and their Christianity unquestionable, but who, if persecution should arise, would go out from us.  In the crisis they would see force in specious reasons that have had an influence on their minds.  Satan has prepared various snares to meet varied minds.

When the law of God is made void, the church will be sifted by fiery trials, and a larger proportion than we now anticipate will give heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.  Instead of being strengthened when brought into strait places, many prove that they are not living branches of the true Vine, they bear not fruit, and the husbandman taketh them away.

The Christian is to be "rooted and grounded" in the truth, that he may stand firm against the temptations of the enemy.  He must have a continual renewal of strength, and he must hold firmly to Bible truth.  Fables of every kind will be brought in to seduce the believer from his allegiance to God, but he is to look up, believe on God, and stand firmly rooted and grounded in the truth. (Evangelism, 360-361)

REFLECTION:  Jesus now explained to His disciples that His own life of self-abnegation was an example of what theirs should be.  Calling about Him, with the disciples, the people who had been lingering near, He said, "If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me."...Jesus bade His followers take up the cross and bear it after Him.  To the disciples His words, though dimly comprehended, pointed to their submission to the most bitter humiliation,--submission even unto death for the sake of Christ. THE THREE-HUNDRED-YEAR WALK

By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, "and was not found, because God had taken him"; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.--Hebrews 11:5

Many regard Enoch as a man to whom God gave special power to live a life more holy than we can live.  But the character of the man who was so holy that he was translated to heaven without seeing death is a representation of the character to be attained by those who will be translated when Christ comes in the clouds of heaven.  Enoch's life was no more exemplary than may be the life of every one who maintains a close connection with God. (The Signs of the Times, October 12, 1904)

Enoch had temptations as well as we.  He was surrounded with society no more friendly to righteousness than is that which surrounds us.  The atmosphere he breathed was tainted with sin and corruption the same as ours, yet he lived a life of holiness.  He was unsullied with the prevailing sins of the age in which he lived.  So may we remain pure and uncorrupted. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 2, 122)

But if we find no pleasure now in the contemplation of heavenly things; if we have no interest in seeking the knowledge of God, no delight in beholding the character of Christ; if holiness has no attractions for us--then we may be sure that our hope of heaven is vain.

Perfect conformity to the will of God is the high aim to be constantly before the Christian.  He will love to talk of God, of Jesus, of the home of bliss and purity which Christ has prepared for them that love Him.  The contemplation of these themes, when the soul feasts upon the blessed assurances of God, the apostle represents as tasting "the powers of the world to come." (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, 745)

REFLECTION:  For three hundred years Enoch had been seeking purity of heart, that he might be in harmony with heaven.  For three centuries he had walked with God.  Day by day he had longed for a closer union; nearer and nearer had grown the communion, until God took him to Himself.  He had stood at the threshold of the eternal world, only a step between him and the land of the blest; and now the portals opened, the walk with God, so long pursued on earth, continued, and he passed through the gates of the holy city, the first from among men to enter there. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, 331)

SUPERNATURAL CONNECTION

Do all things without complaining and disputing.--Philippians 2:14

When the soul surrenders itself to Christ, a new power takes possession of the new heart.  A change is wrought which man can never accomplish for himself.  It is a supernatural work, bringing a supernatural element into human nature.  The soul that is yielded to Christ becomes His own fortress, which He holds in a revolted world, and He intends that no authority shall be known in it but His own.  A soul thus kept in possession by the heavenly agencies is impregnable to the assaults of Satan.  But unless we do yield ourselves to the control of Christ, we shall be dominated by the wicked one.

We must inevitably be under the control of the one or the other of the two great powers that are contending for the supremacy of the world.  It is not necessary for us deliberately to choose the service of the kingdom of darkness in order to come under its dominion.  We have only to neglect to ally ourselves with the kingdom of light.  If we do not co-operate with the heavenly agencies, Satan will take possession of the heart, and will make it his abiding place.  The only defense against evil is the indwelling of Christ in the heart through faith in His righteousness.

Unless we become vitally connected with God, we can never resist the unhallowed effects of self-love, self-indulgence, and temptation to sin.  We may leave off many bad habits, for the time we may part company with Satan; but without a vital connection with God, through the surrender of ourselves to Him moment by moment, we shall be overcome.  Without a personal acquaintance with Christ, and a continual communion, we are at the mercy of the enemy, and shall do his bidding in the end. (The Desire of Ages, 324)

REFLECTION:  Our condition through sin has become preternatural, and the power that restores us must be supernatural, else it has not value.  There is but one power that can break the hold of evil from the hearts of men, and that is the power of God in Jesus Christ.  Only through the blood of the Crucified One is there cleansing from sin. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, 291)

PLANT, WATER, INCREASE

I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.--1 Corinthians 3:6

Because of unconsecrated workers, things will sometimes go wrong.  You may weep over the result of the wrong course of others, but do not worry.  The work is under the supervision of the blessed Master.  All He asks is that the workers shall come to Him for their orders, and obey His directions.

All parts of the work--our churches, missions, Sabbath-schools, institutions--are carried upon His heart.  Why worry?  The intense longing to see the church imbued with life must be tempered with entire trust in God; for "without Me," said the great Burden Bearer, "ye can do nothing."  "Follow Me."  He leads the way; we are to follow.

Let no one overtax his God-given powers in an effort to advance the Lord's work more rapidly.  The power of man cannot hasten the work; with this must be united the power of heavenly intelligences.  Only thus can the work of God be brought to perfection.  Man cannot do God's part of the work.  A Paul may plant, and an Apollos water, but God gives the increase.

In simplicity and meekness man is to co-operate with divine agencies, at all times doing his best, yet ever realizing that God is the great Master Workman.  He is not to feel self-confident, for thus he will exhaust his reserve force and destroy his mental and physical powers.  Though all the workmen now bearing the heaviest burdens should be laid aside, God's work would be carried forward.  Then let our zeal in labor be tempered with reason; let us cease our efforts to do that which the Lord alone can accomplish. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 7, 298)

REFLECTION:  It was Paul who had first preached the gospel in Corinth, and who had organized the church there.  This was the work that the Lord had assigned him.  Later, by God's direction, other workers were brought in, to stand in their lot and place.  The seed sown must be watered, and this Apollos was to do.  He followed Paul in his work, to give further instruction, and to help the seed sown to develop.  He won his way to the heart of the people, but it was God who gave the increase.  It is not human, but divine power, that works transformation of character.  Those who plant and those who water do not cause the growth of the seed; they work under God, as His appointed agencies, co-operating with Him in His work.  To the Master Worker belongs the honor and glory that comes with success. (The Acts of the Apostles, 274)
